New To Hebburn?

Welcome to St John's, Hebburn.  We are a growing Anglican church seeking to be, “ ...at the heart of the community sharing the heart of Christ…”

Wherever you're coming from, we want to give you the space to meet Jesus and to hear the good news of his life-giving message - life in all it's fullness now, and forever.

Our church, in Hebburn, is a gathering of people with different backgrounds, personalities, and ideas, but we are becoming a community with direction and purpose because of our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Please feel free to use this website to get to know us better. It will tell you all about what we do, how we do it, and when various activities take place.

 What is a Christian?

Christianity is often thought of as a cultural thing, something you are born into, grow up with, or something that is your family tradition.

However this is like saying that if you are born in a garage you must be a car.

The bible tells us that Christianity is not about your cultural heritage, its about being in relationship with Jesus Christ. That’s why Mark's gospel begins by saying: “The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

So Christianity is not about going to church, obeying rules, or getting baptized. Nor is it about pews or organs, or a God whose only aim in life is to stop me from having fun (we like to have fun at St John's ).

No, Christianity is primarily about Jesus Christ. The word “gospel” means “good news,” so Mark chapter 1, verse 1 tells us that the gospel, the good news, is all about Jesus Christ.

Christianity is a living relationship between a person and God, where that person has moved from knowing about God distantly, to knowing him personally and directly through the person of Jesus Christ.

If you are new to the Christian message, you will probably have many questions about the Christian faith. We believe that Christianity stands up to rigorous questioning, and we’d love to help you find answers.

 Finding out about Christianity

One of the best ways to learn what Christianity is the Alpha Course, a course which aims to introduce you to orthodox Christianity. Anyone with questions about Jesus, the Bible, God and Christianity will benefit from attending an Alpha course.  For details of the courses, please contact David Osman (tel: 0191 4227505).

Alpha is mainly for adults. However, if you are younger and want to learn more about Christianity, please contact David Osman anyway.

The Building

In 2005 the interior of St John's Church underwent extensive renovation.

A new heating system was installed, carpets were laid throughout the building, and the pews replaced with seating.

This is in keeping with our desire to make the building suitable for a contemporary worshipping community.
